There were two versions of the Volvo S40 being sold in the USA during the 2004 model year.

2000-2004 S40 based on the NedCar platform
2004½ - 2012 S40 based on the Volvo P1 platform

The P1 S40 was released in the middle of the 2004 model year which caused some issues with vehicle registrations in states. Some vehicle registrations will show it as a 2004.5 or 2004½ but due to computer system limitations in some localities, they may be registered as 2004 or 2005 model year vehicles.
