Modern internal combustion engines have very fine tolerances, with high-tech alloy parts machined to within thousandths of an inch. Piston rings form a nearly perfect seal inside the engine's cylinders, but some unburnt gasoline vapors and burnt exhaust gases do still leak out of the cylinders on compression and power strokes and make their way in to the crankcase.

The Positive Crankcase Ventilation (PCV) system's hoses, valves, and seals connect the crankcase to the engine's air intake, allowing intake vacuum to suck away these built-up gases and cleanly burn and expel them with the exhaust. Additionally, an oil/flame trap in the PCV box captures any oil mist or spray in the crankcase vapors and drains back in to the oil pan, reducing the engine's oil consumption.

As a PCV system ages, the insides can get coated with carbon deposits and oil sludge, and under-hood heat can embrittle and degrade rubber hoses and plastic fittings. This problem is magnified in cold climates and with frequent drive cycles: multiple short trips don't get the system hot enough to clear out all the deposits or evaporate condensed water droplets. The resulting buildup of crankcase air pressure will physically push out oil seals if not fixed!
